How to Read a Syllabus

What is a syllabus? Think of it like a contract, it explains what the course is about, why it is taught, when & where it happens, and what is required of you to be successful in the course.

Course Textbooks

First Day Complete is our affordable textbook rental program that will provide all undergraduate and graduate students with the materials needed to succeed each semester! Students are automatically enrolled.

The Campus Store can be found in the Butler Building and has all of your textbooks plus other academic supplies.

Calendars - Keep track of your schedule!

Pay Attention to Add/Drop Policies

Refer to the add/drop policies so you can register for the courses you need and want, and don’t have to pay unexpected tuition charges.

You can find more information about the add/drop procedure in this link.

Bottom line: As a student your schedule, as of when add/drop ends, is entirely your responsibility and will determine grades and billing.

Students will have until the end of the first week to drop completely without penalty.

Students will have until the end of the second week to make schedule adjustments without penalty.

If you withdraw from a course after the drop/add period, but before the end of the 10th week of the semester, you will receive a grade of W, which does not count in your GPA.

From the 11th week and after, if you are passing the course, you can still withdraw and receive a W, in consultation with the professor and your advisor.

From the 11th week and after, if you are failing the course, you can still withdraw, but you will receive an F.

If you would like to add/drop a course after the start of the semester, please talk to your advisor and fill out this form in myNU (must be signed in to access the link, after signing in please click on the link).

What is an Advisor? What is Advisement?

Your advisor is usually a professor(s) in your college(s) who can assist you in selecting or changing courses each semester. You traditionally meet with your advisor once a semester during advisement and this is the last step before registering for the next semester.

During advisement, you both discuss what courses you should take the following semester. DO NOT expect your advisor to do the heavy lifting, it is on you to see what courses are available, fit in your schedule, and check required courses on progress tab in Self Service.

Once your planned schedule is approved, your advisor will mark your advisement complete in Self-Service. Then you be able to register once your registration window opens. You can find the registration schedule on the Records page.

Do you know the location of your advisor on campus? Or the office of each of your professors?

Have you reviewed your major and/or minor requirements?
