The Tuscarora Nation and the Niagara Power Project

Did you know that Niagara University use to have a golf course, cemetery and lake on campus?  It did until NU had to sell 200 acres of its land to the  New York Power Authority for $5 million in 1958 so the the Power Project could be built.

More contentious was a dispute between New York State and the Tuscarora Indian Nation that resulted in a court allowing the Power Authority to take (upon payment of "just" compensation") Tuscarora land to build the project.

Write the story of the  dispute by examining contemporary accounts:

Tips:

  • Not every article is relevant, but you can tell which are pretty easily. Remember to identify themes and create a coherent narrative. In other words, don't just summarize the articles, but write an interesting history.
  • Remember that the core of your paper should be based on contemporary accounts and contain numerous quotes from those accounts, allowing you to examine the positions from both sides.
  • Please only use the sources listed above except to fill gaps. For example, you can use reputable web sites to:

    • Identify a person
    • Define a technical term
    • Clarify chronology
    • Find court cases referred to
    • Find images
