Full-text access to two African American newspapers: Chicago Defender (1910-1975) and New York Amsterdam News (1922-1993).
African American Newspapers, Series 1, 1827-1998, provides online access to 280 U.S. newspapers chronicling a century and a half of the African American experience. This unique collection, which includes papers from more than 35 states, features many rare and historically significant 19th-century titles.
This collection (1976-present) covers many topical categories such as slavery and flights to freedom, voting rights and voter suppression and disenfranchisement, segregation and civil rights, prejudice and discrimination and activism and protest movements.
Ebony Magazine Archive covers civil rights, education, entrepreneurship and other social topics with an African-American focus. It includes more than 800 issues providing a broad view of African-American culture from its first issue in 1945 through 2014.
Primary Source Collections:
Transcriptions of nearly 700 interviews with those who made history in the struggles for voting rights, against discrimination in housing, for the desegregation of the schools, to expose racism in hiring, in defiance of police brutality, and to address poverty in the African American communities.
A collection of materials on the history of slavery. Includes four parts: Debates Over Slavery and Abolition, Slave Trade in the Atlantic World, The Institution of Slavery, and The Age of Emancipation.
Legal materials relating to the history of slavery in the United States and the English-speaking world. This includes every federal, state, and colony statute on slavery, as well as all reported state and federal cases on the subject.
This collection includes 4,285 pages from the Federal Bureau of Investigation Library, including surveillance reports, chronologies, witness statements and more regarding the Freedom Rides, the Kennedy administration and the segregated South.
Issues and Debate:
Explores social issues and controversial topics in a unique pro/con format. Also includes relevant journal articles and primary sources.
