What is a Hippie?

According to newspaper and magazine articles written in 1967, what is a Hippie?  What did they believe?  How did they act? How did some people react to them? How did hippies react to people's opinions of them?

Tips

  • Don't just summarize articles. Identify patterns. Create a coherent narrative.
  • Provide evidence from the articles and documentaries by recounting stories or quoting. For example, instead of writing "hippies believed so and so," can you find quotes from people describing their own beliefs?
  • Be careful not to overgeneralize.  For example, if an article describes a crime committed by someone described as a hippie, that doesn't mean hippies are crime-prone.
  • There could be bias in the articles, so account for that.
  • Be careful with the documentaries.  They could be revealing as much about the documentary producers as about hippie culture.
