Niagara University Library
Spring 2005 Reference Desk Survey
The Library conducted a survey of Niagara University students during the Spring 2005 semester to learn what services the Library’s Reference Department provided that were important to them. The survey was sent to the entire student population via email, and it was also conducted in four classroom settings.

Four hundred twenty-five (425) students responded:

  • Freshmen - 34%
  • Sophomores - 20%
  • Juniors - 25%
  • Seniors - 16%
  • Graduate Students - 5%

Some key findings were:

  • 62% said they used the Library several times a month
  • 87% thought it was important that a reference librarian be on duty all the hours that the Library was open
  • 75% said that they would like to be able to make an appointment and receive one-on-one assistance from a reference librarian who specialized in research in their major

This survey revealed two important things. The first was that students still prefer that a reference librarian be on duty all hours that the Library is open. With research tools so readily available online, one popular theory is that students may not come to the Library as often or require the services of a reference librarian. The Library had been considering the idea of no longer having a reference librarian on duty during all its hours and reallocating some of its nighttime staffing hours. However, in light of this survey, the Library is abandoning this idea and will continue its policy of staffing a reference librarian during all its hours of operation.

The second thing this survey revealed was that students expressed a strong desire for one-on-one appointments with a reference librarian. This was a pleasant surprise because this is a service the Library has always felt was underutilized. The Library will work on making this service more visible to the student population though various publicity methods.

The Library would like to thank all the students who responded and the professors who generously permitted the Library to conduct this survey during their classes.
