Edward Hopper: An Intimate Biography
by
Gail Levin

"Edward Hopper was the quintessential realist painter of twentieth-century America.
His images have become part of the very grain and texture of American experience,
and even today, thirty years after his death, it is all but impossible to see
America without some refraction through them".
--Robert Hughes, 1997.

Since his death in 1967 Edward Hopper has remained one of America's most popular artists. His paintings such as Nighthawks , have become deeply fixated within American culture. In Hopper's paintings people are depicted as being alone, usually seen in half empty theaters, rooming houses or deserted streets. Even when they are shown sharing the company of others the feeling of being isolated persists. His landscapes, especially those of the New England Coastline, can be seen as chilling studies of desolation. But it isn't just isolation or stark detail that characterized Hoppers's work but the at times, almost violent emotion that simmers beneath their surface.

Art historian Gail Levin's Edward Hopper: An Intimate Biography is an insightful biography that offers the reader an understanding of some of those emotional undercurrents. Curator,as well as author of several major studies and exhibitions of Hopper's work Levin offers an unique perspective into Hopper's personality and his work. Edward Hopper: An Intimate Biography is not just a biography of Hopper but it is also the story of his very passionate, and sometimes stormy marriage to the artist Josephine Nivison. According to Levin, it was Hopper's marriage to Nivison that gave new impulse to his painting. Throughout the marriage Jo kept a diary, recording the intimate details of their lives providing for the reader a deeper understanding into not only their lives but Hopper's work.

Noted art critic Robert Hughes describes Edward Hopper "A definitive biography", while Michael Kammen of The New York Times calls it "A nearly flawless account of a remarkable artist....and a compelling and accessible narrative for anyone even remotely interested in modern American art.."
