| The Structure of Evolutionary Theory by Stephen Jay Gould |
|
The world of biology lost a great popularizer when Stephen Jay Gould died earlier this year.
Best known for the monthly columns he wrote for the magazine Natural History, Gould was also an important and original
evolutionary thinker himself.
It was our good fortune that he managed to finish his monumental extension of Darwin's evolutionary thought. The 1,400 page book is not an easy read, but as Booklist stated, "Gould's signature wit, erudition, warmth, and vigor are everywhere evident." He is maddeningly verbose at times, but the reader's persistence is well rewarded. Despite its flaws, The Structure of Evolutionary Theory is an important book. It can be found on the basement level of the Library at call number QH366.2 .G663 2002. You can also view other books written by Gould owned by the Library.
David Schoen wrote this Monthly Book Spotlight.
