A Selection of Children's Literature Books

It is located on the first floor of the building at the front of the Current Journals display area. Here is a small sample of some of the books you will find in this special collection.

Frog and Toad are Friends by Arnold Lobel is a delightful book about friendship and loyalty. There are five cute and humorous stories with illustrations. For example, in Spring, Frog helps Toad find spring after a long winter's sleep. In Story, both Toad and Frog get sick and make each other feel better. In Lost Button, Toad loses a button after a long walk, and Frog helps recover it. The other two stories are A Swine and The Letter. This book is suggested for readers ages 4-8 and is located at call number PZ9.71.L63 Fr6 1979.

image of Out of the Dust book cover Out of the Dust by Karen Hesse is a novel that reads like a book of poetry. Set in the 1930's during the Great Depression, Billy Jo is a teenager who suffers the loss of her mother. Her father does not accept her because he would rather have had a son. Billy Jo must take on more responsibilities than any child her age. Although she goes through much pain and anguish, she finds hope. The strength and courage people found during these hard times should make us truly appreciate and be grateful for what we have today. This book won the Newbery Award and many other awards. It is suggested for readers ages 11-13 and is located at call number PZ20.4.H47 Ou8 1997.

image of Sarah Plain and Tall book coverSarah, Plain and Tall by Patricia MacLachlan is a frontier-type story that takes place on the prairie. A father attempts to recruit a wife and mother for his two children years after his wife passes on, and Sarah Wheaton from Maine answers his newspaper advertisement. Sarah loved her home by the sea, but she must now move to a new place. Her life, along with the family's, changes dramatically, and she wonders if this new family will one day truly become her own. This book won the Newbery award and is suggested for readers ages 7-9. It is located at call number PZ20.4.M33 Sa7 1985.

image of Wind in the Willows book cover The Wind in the Willows, written by Kenneth Grahame and illustrated by Inga Moore, is a story about a mole who is tired of spring cleaning. He goes outside to begin a journey that will lead him to finding friends and creating wonderful adventures. The mole and all his friends learn about harmony, respecting life and nature and having fun. This classic and beautifully illustrated book is suggested for readers ages 8-11. It is located at call number PZ9.71.G73 Wi6 2003.
